HB Tórshavn beat champions EB/Streymur 3-1
in the 2009 Super Cup

HB had the first go at goal after 4 minutes when Andrew av Fløtum between two EB/Streymur defenders took the ball down with his chest and turned, but his finish was blocked to a corner.

On 27 minutes, a downward-header from Christian R. Mouritsen Correction: Johan Ejvind Mouritsen forced EB/Streymur goalkeeper René Tórgarð to give a corner. From the corner, HB’s central defender Hans á Lag powered his way in front of the EB/Streymur defenders to put HB in front with an easy tap in.

EB/Streymur created no real scoring opportunity throughout the first 45 minutes and HB goalkeeper Símun Rógvi Hansen never had to make a save. A diagonal long range effort from Gudmund Nielsen late in the half that went a metre wide of the far post was EB/Streynur’s best effort.

HB doubled their lead just a couple of minutes into the second half when Páll Mohr Joensen was put through with a cheeky back-heel. Clear with the keeper, Mohr Joensen finished coolly to double HB’s lead.

HB were close to making it 3-0 when Fróði Benjaminsen’s header rattled the crossbar shortly before the hour-mark.

But 7 minutes from time, EB/Streymur brought some excitement back into the contest when Brian Olsen’s excellent “Zlatan-style-first-timer-back-heel” found the back of the net.

But EB/Streymur’s joy was short-lived, however, as HB increased their lead again just 3 minutes later. EB/Streymur initially saved on the line from a corner but couldn’t clear the ball that went to Rógvi Poulsen who with a looping shot made the win safe for HB.

The win was well deserved for HB as they generally were the better team, although they in no way impressed. Occasionally HB managed to put a few passes together, but it was evident that it’s still early days in the season.

EB/Streymur seemed extremely poor and had nothing what so ever to offer. They looked very far from being a title contender. But surely, they will improve! For example, last season’s top scorer Arnbjørn Hansen was not in EB/Streymur’s team today as he’s injured. Last year, EB/Streymur lost 4-0 to NSÍ Runavík in the Super Cup 4-0 but still went on to win the title convincingly.

Intrestingly, HB had 3 Mouritsen brothers in the team today: Christian Mouritsen, who was in the starting line up, and then the elder Jóhan Ejvind and the younger Kristin, who came on in the second half. Rubbish: Christian Mouritsen was on the bench for the whole match. It was Johan Ejvind who was in the starting line-up. Younger brother Kristin came on in the second half.

A Super Cup is supposed to be a contest between the champions and the cup winners, but today it was the champions playing the league’s runners up, HB. But it should really have been B36 Tórshavn who played instead of HB, as B36 were losing cup finalists (losing the final against double-winners EB/Streymur).

All proceeds from the match was donated to charity.
