October 08, 2010: UEFA Euro 2012 Qualifier, Group C:

Slovenia - Faroe Islands 5-1 (2-0)
25' 1-0 Tim Matavz
36' 2-0 Tim Matavz
65' 3-0 Tim Matavz
72' 4-0 Milivoje Novakovic (pen)
84' 5-0 Zlatko Dedic
90'+3 5-1 Christian R. Mouritsen

Slovenia went close within the first 5 minutes of the match, but Jónas Tór Næs saved off the line after a corner. A couple of minutes later, goalkeeper Jákup Mikkelsen just managed to get his fingertips on Tim Matavz's shot to push it onto the post and out. That could be considered a warning shot from Matvaz as he went on to make a hattrick.

Milivoje Novakovic should have put Slovenia ahead after a quarter of an hour when he was played clear, but he fired over the goal.

But 25 minutes into the game there was no mercy when a cross from the right found the unmarked Matavz who headed Slovenia into the lead.

Ten minutes later Mikkelsen made an incredible save to keep out the free kick, although the joy was short-lived as Matavaz made it 2-0 a minute later as he took advantage of the hesitating Faroese defensive play before he fired the ball into the back of the net just inside the post.

It nearly became 3-0 a couple of minutes later, but this time the ball bounced of the woodwork.

Slovenia started brightly again in the second half and went close early on before the Faroes had their best move of the match which was started and finished by Hjalgrím Elttør after 10 minutes.

20 minutes through the half Matavz completed his hat trick with a header from close range after the Faroes hadn't properly cleared a cross which was lifted into the goal area again. But Matavz definitely looked to be in an off side position when the ball was played (the Faroese right back is behind the by-line) .

Five minutes later Slovenia were awarded a penalty when Josip Ilicic went down in the penalty area. Although the defender slightly touched the forward, it was a clear dive and a very soft penalty indeed.
- Novakovic scored from the spot to make it 4-0.

Zlatko Dedic made it 5-0 as he took advantage of the slow defence in the 86th minute.

Slovenia were close to making it 6-0, but the ball was saved off the line once again. Instead it were the Faroes who went on to score a goal almost 3 minutes into added time when Christian R. Mouritsen was given a gift by the Slovenian defender, and clear with the goalkeeper, Mouritsen made no mistake to get a late consolation.
