September 27, 2008: Faroese news from Iceland:

Símun Samuelsen's lead-goal for Keflavík not enough for the title as they are pipped by FH Hafnarfjørður on the last day of the season. However, Faroese woman-goalkeeper Randi Wardum wins the Icelandic title with her Icelandic club Valur.

On Saturday Faroese international Símun Samuelsen had the chance to win the Icelandic Championship title with his club Keflavík, as they were leading FH Hafnarfjørður by 2 points coming into the final round.

Keflavík had a tough last match against 3rd placed Fram, but when Símun Samuelsen fired Keflavík into the lead about 10 minutes into the second half, the title looked to be going Keflavíks's way, which would have been their first title since 1973.

A minute earlier, title rivals Hafnarfjørður had taken the lead against Fylkir. But as long as Keflavík were winning, Hafnafjørður's result had no bearing on Keflavíks fate.

But a quarter of an hour later, Keflavík weren't in control of their own faith anymore, as Fram equalized. With 1-1 between Keflavík and Fram, Keflavík would still clinch the title on goal difference, if Hafnarfjørður only won 1-0.

But then disaster struck for Keflavík. Almost at the same time, 11-12 minutes from time, Hafnarfjørður first made it 2-0 against Fylkir, and just a minute later, Fram took the lead against Keflavík.

That became the final score in both matches and therefore FH Hafnarfjørður were crowned champions, a point ahead of Símun Samuelsen and Keflavík. This was FH's (as they are called in Iceland) 4th title in 5 seasons.

In the penultimate round, Keflavík had visited FH Hafnarfjørður and had equalized to 2-2 after 80 minutes, but in added time, Hafnarfjørður snatched victory. Had that match ended 2-2, Keflavík would be champions today… That's how close it was…

The guy holding his head in disbelief on “01:09” in the video is Símun Samuelsen.

A Faroese Women's Champion in Iceland
We haven't written much about women on this website, but we'll make an exception today, because a couple of weeks ago, Faroese goalkeeper Randi Wardum won the Icelandic title with her club Valur. They had the chance for the double, but lost the cup final 4-0 to KR Reykjavík a week ago.

Valur spotted Wardum's goalkeeping-skills while plying for KÍ Klaksvík against Valur in a European Cup-match last year. Wardum switched from HB Tórshavn to KÍ Klaksvík in 2004. KÍ Klaksvík just recently won their 9th straight Faroese title.
