July 29, 2005: The Cup Competition – The Final: GÍ Gøta – ÍF Fuglafjørður 4-1 (2-0) GÍ made a bright start to the match and forced ÍF´s goalkeeper to make two diving saves within the first few minutes of the game. After about 20 minutes, ÍF were very close to taking the lead with a direct freekick from Magni á Lakjuni, who curled the ball over the wall, but hit the crossbar (maybe the keeper touched it also) and the ball bounced on the line, but GÍ survived. But half an hour into the match, it was GÍ who scored to 1-0. GÍ took a long throw in and ÍF´s goalkeeper made a meal of it and the ball bounced to Hanus Jacobsen, who blasted it on the underside of the crossbar and into the net. Later in the first half, a passive looking ÍF defence made it easy for GÍ to combine through on the left play Hanus Jacobsen free in the penalty area and he had no problems beating the keeper. In the second half, GÍ play more defensively and gave ÍF all the initiative and they said thank you very much and piled on the pressure and created several decent scoring opportunities. About 30 minutes in to the second half, Hanus Eliasen was brought down in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot, and there, Gunnar Nielsen made no mistake and reduced the deficit to 1 goal and put new excitement into the game. But with an incredible shot from the corner of the penalty area, Áslakur Petersen rocketed the ball into the near corner and made it 3-1 for GÍ. After this, ÍF lost all hope of winning the Cup and a few minutes from the end, Hanus Jacobsen made it 4-1 with his third goal of the match, as GÍ was allowed to stroll through ÍF´s defence. |
